Cover Ups

A fresh start for your skin. No judgment, just great art.

Your Story, Reimagined

Sometimes, the tattoo you have isn't the one you want anymore. Whether it’s an old design that no longer fits your style, a name you’ve moved on from, or simply a piece that didn’t turn out right, we get it. At Sundog Tattoo, we see a cover-up as an opportunity for a beautiful transformation—a chance to turn a story you're ready to close into a new piece of art that you'll love.

Taylor specializes in cover-up tattoos and uses her knowledge of color, density, and design to create a seamless new piece that makes the old one disappear. This process is a collaboration, and it's essential that we start with a conversation.

The Cover-Up Process

Covering up a tattoo is more complex than a new design, so we have a specific process to ensure a successful result.

1. The Consultation is a Must. Every cover-up project begins with a consultation. Taylor will need to see your existing tattoo in person or through clear photos. We'll discuss the tattoo's size, color, and location, which are all factors that influence what's possible.

2. Designing for a Cover-Up Because we're working with an existing canvas, the new design needs to be heavier, darker, and more detailed than the original tattoo. You'll often see styles like blackwork, traditional, or bold floral designs used for this purpose. We'll work with you to create a design that not only covers the old tattoo but also feels like a natural part of your skin.

3. Patience is Key Cover-ups often require more time and, in some cases, multiple sessions. We'll give you a clear estimate of the time and commitment needed during your consultation.

4. We Can't Cover Everything. Some tattoos—like those that are very large, very dark, or in a difficult location—may be challenging to cover completely. In some cases, we might suggest a few laser removal sessions to lighten the tattoo first, which can open up a wider range of design possibilities.
